Born in 1973 in Bangkok, Prabda Yoon left Thailand
at the age of fifteen to be educated in the United States. In
1997, he graduated with a BFA in Fine Arts from New York City's
Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art. After a
brief experience as a freelance graphic designer in New York
City, Prabda returned to Bangkok in 1998 for the country's mandatory
military duty. Prabda's work as a writer began soon after his
discharge from the army in 1999.
Prabda's short stories, criticisms, and essays have appeared
in numerous Thai publications and newspapers since. He has been
a regular columnist for several magazines, published many story
collections, novels, essay collections, written screenplays,
and produced music. His 2002 short story collection, Probability,
won the S.E.A. Write Award, Thailand's most prestigious literary
award. His screenplay for the film "Last Life in the Universe"
(directed by Pen-ek Ratanaruang) won Thailand's Film Critic
Association Award for Best Screenplay. "Invisible Waves,"
a film made from Prabda's second screenplay (also by Pen-ek
Ratanaruang) was in competition at the 2006 Berlin Film Festival.
Prabda's short stories and essays have been translated and published
in Japan, where he has a modest following.
In 2005 Prabda founded Typhoon Books, an independent publishing
house for alternative books, in Bangkok. |
